Director, Program in Medical Nutrition Sciences

Dear Prospective Student:
Thank you for your interest in the Master of Arts (MA) and/or the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program in Medical Nutrition Sciences at Boston University School of Medicine.  The Program in Medical Nutrition Sciences is the newest offering in the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences at the Boston University School of Medicine.  This program is rigorous and interdisciplinary, involving the full collaboration of the Boston University School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, and the School of Public Health.
The promary goal of the program is to provide multidisciplinary training in medical nutrition sciences that will prepare students for a wide variety of relevant caree opportunities in four primary areas:
  • basic, epidemiological, and clinical nutrition research
  • nutrition and public health promotion at the individual and population levels
  • nutrition policy and program planning and
  • nutrition and health communications.

It is quite unique that this program is offered through our Medical School and that it brings together the wide-ranging resources of the entire campus in order to train graduate students in Medical Nutrition Sciences.

The core curriculum for the program incorporates state-of-the-art, advanced training and a requried thesis or dissertation in the following areas of research and practice:

  • basic and laboratory nutritional sciences and related research methods and technologies
  • techniques for translating nutritional sciences into medical nutrition therapies, interventions, products, and services
  • epidemiological, clinical and outcomes research methods used to evaluate relationships between nutritional status and health outcomes
  • methods to design and test the efficacy and impact of medical nutrition therapies and nutritional interventions
  • processes for the formulation and monitoring of nutrition-related health policies, programs, and campaigns, and strateties for effective public and professional communications of nutritional science.

Boston provides a wealth of opportunities for students.  It is recognized as one of the leading health care centers of the world.  Boston University Medical Center, located in the South End of Boston, forms a semi-autonomous but integral part of Boston University.  It consolidates the resources and activities of the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, The Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and Boston Medical Center Hospital.  Biosquare, a complex which houses specialized research facilities, biotechnology companies, is the newest addition to the area.  The opportunities of academic and personal growth abound and we hope you will consider joining us.
