A Message from Ronald B. Corley, Ph.D.

Chairman of Microbiology

Welcome to the Department of Microbiology. We are excited about the direction of research and graduate studies in the Department of Microbiology and are pleased to be able to share them with you. The Department is located in contiguous space on the fifth floors of the Instructional and Housman Research buildings of the Boston University School of Medicine. The Department contains modern laboratory research facilities, state- of-the-art instrumentation and an up-to-date library.

We offer graduate training in the broad areas of Microbiology and Immunology. The research interests of the faculty in the Department of Microbiology range from studies of bacteriology, virology, and immunology to those of gene expression and function. PhD training is available in Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis as well as through the interdepartmental training programs in Immunology, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Oncobiology.

Students in our graduate program participate in formal coursework, seminars, and directed research in their chosen fields of study. Students may select to do their thesis research in their chosen field of study with any of the graduate faculty in the Department of Microbiology as well as within other departments and programs of the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences. Together, theses faculty offer studies in a wide variety of scientific disciplines.

Boston is a city known for its excellence in scientific and medical education as well as its historic, cultural, recreational, and sports activities. Students in the Department have the opportunity to avail themselves of this rich scientific and medical community and to interact with other institutions offering graduate programs.

We hope you will visit our website at www.bumc.bu.edu/microbiology for additional detailed information of the Department

Sincerely,

Ronald B. Corley, Ph.D., Chairman
