A
Message from David H. Farb, PhD
Chairman
of the Department of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics
Dear Student,
Congratulations
on deciding to pursue a career in basic medical research. The road of
scientific inquiry is challenging and the curriculum of study toward
the MA/PhD degree is just the beginning of that journey. As a
student here, you will learn to carry out independent research and to
communicate your knowledge and wisdom to those who will follow in your
path. I cannot overemphasize the importance of basic medical research.
Discoveries in the research laboratory can translate quickly
into diagnostics or even cures for disease. Startling recent advances,
such as the identification of the gene for Huntington's Disease and
the use of gene therapy for cystic fibrosis, are encouraging signs that
the twenty-first century will bring many new approaches to therapeutics.
The Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
at the Boston University School of Medicine is committed to fostering
integrative research and to providing an environment in which discoveries
from basic science laboratories are translated into therapeutic agents.
It is my hope that your own research will someday contribute
to the elimination of some of the greatest sources of human suffering,
such as birth defects, cardiovascular disease, cancer and neuropsychiatric
disorders. The excellence of our training program has been recognized
nationally by the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences in
the form of funding for our interdepartmental University-wide Program
in Biomolecular Pharmacology.
We
look forward to reviewing your application and hope that you will join
our training program in Pharmacology.
Best
wishes,
David
