Welcome:
Thank
you for your interest in Biophysics and Physiology at Boston University
School of Medicine. Graduate education plays a key role in the vibrancy
of our scientific research, and we encourage inquiries about our academic
programs.
Please
note, that in July, 2001 the Department
of Physiology merged with the Department
of Biophysics to create a new and
exciting department called Physiology and Biophysics with enhanced
programs in graduate education and research. As you examine the graduate
opportunities at Boston University School of Medicine, I would like
to suggest that you look closely at the programs in Biophysics
and Physiology that are offered by the new department. Our
website
provides up to date
information on all the exciting aspects of the research and teaching
programs of this new evolving department and I invite you to browse
for the latest information.
Research
in the new department encompasses many facets of structural biology,
cell biology, molecular and cellular physiology and molecular biophysics,
with excellent departmental facilities that provide state-of-the-art
instrumentation and tools needed for our research. X-ray diffractometers,
cryo-electron and light microscopes, NMR spectrometers, CD and fluorescence
spectrometers, calorimeters, optical tweezers, computer systems, centrifuges,
and a wide spectrum of biochemical and molecular biological equipment
are available within the department. The research programs of the
faculty are extremely well supported by research grants from the National
Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association and other funding
agencies. The size of the Department is conducive to collaborations
between groups and many of the faculty members have joint appointments
in the Department
of Biochemistry or the Department
of Medicine. The Department sponsors a popular weekly seminar
series that features
both local and outside speakers.
We
are located in the new Center
for Advanced Biomedical Research Building and
the School of Medicine Instructional Building. Our faculty has a wide
range of interests, our scope is expanding into the field of proteomics
and genomics and we are committed to continued growth in this millennium.
